new building for the museum of bavarian history in Regensburg
What Minister President Horst Seehofer described as "Bavaria's cultural milestone" is currently under construction in Regensburg. The "Museum of Bavarian History" presents the development of the State of Bavaria in the last two hundred years, over 3,500 square metre exhibition area. Since 2015, the construction is running at full speed for this ambitious project. The design for the new prestigious project of the federal state of Bavaria comes from the renowned architectural office Wörner Traxler Richter from Frankfurt am Main. In 2013, the architectural group won the competition. The jury was impressed by the sensitive planning in a special neighborhood: according to the architects design, the new museum will be cleverly integrated in the Regensburg Old Town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the same time, the new building is prominent and clearly seen directly from the banks of Danube.
The idea of the planners is to create a connection between the city and the river with the building, which invites the visitor to stroll in it. The new building will revive the historic city structure, i.e. the former Hunnenplatz and Eschergasse. The actual exhibition finds its place in three massive structures, which are given an INOCLAD facade made of light ceramic relief panels. The buildings are connected by a transparent steel-glass facade and a folding roof glazing. The result is a building-high, light-flooded atrium, which now depicts the historic area from the inside.
When our facade and glass roof elements are installed in Regensburg over the next few month and have to fit into one another with millimetre precision, this is just the end of a meticulously accurate 3-D planning process that took place on the computer for months. What will later appear as an external skin made of a single cast consists of countless individual elements. For example, in the case of glass roofs, no components are exactly the same as the other. Many glazings are trapezoidal or trigonal, but always without right angles. What all facade and roof elements have in common, are the highest technical standards, e.g. with terms to antiburglary protection. The museum building is also constructed in passive house standard. There must be no delays under any conditions. Finally, the opening is planned for the anniversary year 2018. This year the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bavaria celebrates its 200th birthday. At the same time, the State of Bavaria celebrates its 100th anniversary.
